I'm looking for suggestions at learning DXL. I'm a requirements lead and have inherited DOORS admin duties. We are a system engineering shop and write specs which are then bid out. With no coders/software developers here I've no in-house expertise to leverage. What little I've accomplished so far is from the wonderful (not!) DXL documentation and the wonderful (or real!) help here and a couple of other DXL sites. Thanks all. I've been putting off a DXL deep dive, unfortunately a corporate decision to remain with DOORS 9 vice DNG makes leaning DXL critical. My coding experiences ends with FORTRAN 77 and Focus SQL. So while I understand one type of coding, I don't understand modern syntax. I do have some a fundamental understanding of DB structure from my SQL work. I figured I'll try learning C to get the fundamentals due to C heritage of DXL. Everything I find turns out to be C+ or C#. The one C compiler I found won't run on windows XP or later. Right now I'm stumbling around in other's code (mostly Tony Goodman's) hoping to make simple adjustments. And I'm just on the easy stuff - formatting attributes and exports, nowhere near triggers and batch jobs. I'd really need to understand, and hopefully get to be a contributor here as well. Suggestions on how to go about learning DXL? I C the right place to start? thanks, Jim Jim Wetzel - Wed Aug 26 11:53:23 EDT 2015 |
Re: Need suggestions for learning DXL The best way to learn DXL is to go to a training course. IBM or DOORS consultants organize these courses, here is one example from IBM After this kind of course you have the basics of DXL and can start own your own to do the real learning. As probably mentioned in this forum DOORS DXL is not so well documented, so many times DXL development brings to mind the definition of programming:

Re: Need suggestions for learning DXL Yes the training course. No, I don't think learning "C" first and then moving over to DXL will save any time. However, reading the fundamentals of C or C++ (1st third of a course or book) may prove useful. They should have some example programs and explain how they work. Yes, the DXL manual is a reference manual and teaches very little. You DEFINATELY need to quickly learn how the syntax in the manual corresponds to how each command is used. Find some example programs in the manual, then compare the commands used with the syntax of them before the examples. You need to compare some complicated cod with how it looks in the GUI (i.e. the dialog) and what it does in the database. The browse DXL window is pretty good for that; it has some good examples that can be explained in user GUI form; then you can study the code to see how it affected that effect. -Louie |
